Alleppey Beach - Venice of the East

The beautiful Alleppey Beach lies on a thin strip of land which is flanked by the azure Arabian Sea on the west and the serene Punnamada backwaters in the east. It is also known as Alappuzha Beach. With its deep blue freshwater lakes and some old heritage buildings in the vicinity, Alleppey Beach is a great destination for travelers. Situated 5 km off Alappuzha Railway Station, the beach has an open air stage where cultural events are organized throughout the year.

There are artistically designed walkways with excellent seating arrangement and swaying palm trees from where you can enjoy a great view of the beach and its surroundings. There is a 1000 ft long pier known as Kadal Palam or Sea Bridge which was constructed by Captain Hugh Crawford to load materials onto the ships. Now in dilapidated condition, tourists are not permitted to enter the bridge. There is a lighthouse on the beach which was also constructed by Captain Crawford in 1862.

The beams of the lighthouse used to be visible from a distance of 25 km in the sea and the ships used to find their locations in the sea with the help of the beam of the lighthouse. Sea Bridge and the light house both collectively recreate the charm of bygone era at the Alleppey Beach. The beach provides a perfect ambience to unwind yourself and enjoy the bounties of mother nature. Its cool breeze and coconut canopies will have a soothing effect on your mind and body.

Alleppey is also known as the Venice of the East due to its striking similarity with Venice and its importance as a trade centre for spices and other edibles. Its maze of backwaters, canals and old arched bridges will transport you to the charm of olden days when all the trade was done by sea routes only. The port here was built by Raja Kesava Das in the 18th century, who was Dewan of Travancore Princely State for easy transportation of the goods with European traders.
