Varkala Beach

The 2 km long red cliff of Varkala Beach provides a stunning contrast to the azure waters of the Arabian Sea and the clear blue sky above. Varkala lies 50 km northwest of Thiurvananthapuram and 37 km off Kollam in Kerala. With its swaying palm trees and soft sand at your feet, the isolated Varkala Beach promises a rejuvenating holiday experience for the travelers. There are mineral water springs on the beach which are supposed to have medicinal values and a lot of tourists bathe in them to get rid of their body ailments.

Some people believe that a dip in the mineral springs of the beach cleanses them not only of their skin ailments but also their sins and purifies their souls. These mineral springs are centered on the north edge of the beach in Varkala, hence this edge of the beach is also known as "Papanasham" or the eliminator of the sins. There is an old Shree Janardhana Swamy temple at the north end of the beach in Varkala which is visited by thousands every day.

Varkala beach is thronged by large number of devotees on new moon day when people come here to dip in the holy mineral spring waters of the beach to get rid of their sins and bodily diseases. The southern end of the beach is known as Thiruvambady Beach. There is also a Nature Cure Centre at the beach which is one of the draws of the beach as tourists come here to get Ayurvedic massage and also to get some medicines made from rare herbs.

Kappil beach is the place where you can enjoy a houseboat ride in the world famous Kerala backwaters. Anjengo Fort and Varkala Tunnel are other attractions of the beach. Ponnumthurut Island is an ideal location for nature exploration. You can reach to the island by boat only.


Varkala Beach is 180 km from Kochi International Airport and 138 km from Kanyakumari. The beach town is well connected by trains and buses with Ponmudi (88 km), Sabarimala (140 km), Thekkady (186 km) and other neighboring cities.
