Munnar Travel Guide

Munnar, the milieu of undulating mountain vistas, craggy peaks, lush tea estates and crusty peak environ, really attracts visitors to beat the high temperature of lowlands. This extraordinarily striking hill town, situated at a height of 6000 ft is considered the most desirable summer resort of Kerala. In those colonial days when British monarchy was established, Munnar even was regarded as an important resort.

As it is sited on the junction of three rivers Kundala Mudrapuzha and Nallathani, it was given the name Munnar. Apart from tourism, the enormous coffee plantation and tea estates are the major factors added to its flourishing economy. It is situated in Kerala's Idukki district. It has been considered that this tourist spot dates back to 10th century; however its history also relates it with Stone Age as many pre-historic relics have been discovered.

In 17th century, a Tamil origin group called 'Muthuvans' migrated to this summer resort and settled down its nearby regions. During 19th century this place mingled with Anchunadu that was a small tribal monarchy as well as one of amongst the earliest South Indian tribal settlements. In earlier days the fertile soil of its land was used to cultivate ginger, cardamom along with other spices.

Due to Spanish planters, Munnar came into limelight and John Daniel Munro, visited Munnar for the first time during mid 19th century and after taking permission from Poonjar's Maharaja, he acquired 588 sq. km of land. Later in 1976 it was procured by Tata-Finlay Ltd.
